Understanding The Signifiance Of Urban Survival

Living in the City

Most people recognize the fact that the city is the worst place to live especially in times of crisis. There are really very few people who will turn their backs to a city no matter how small, unsafe, and how limited their urban survival skills might turn out to be. This is reflected in the fact that the queue of people moving in is, at any one time, longer than the queue of people moving out. Some people will perhaps harbor the notion that once they have earned enough and accomplished all they want, they might move back to their hometowns. The truth is they don’t because no one likes change.

Urban Survival

To their credit however, many of these people have a dependence on the city for their livelihood so it’s really more of a case of taking the good with the bad. Knowing that you are condemned to never leave the city, it might push you to learn a few urban survival tactics that might come in handy in a crisis. The reason why this is important is firstly because urban areas are artificial. They are constructed for dedicated purposes such as business, easy access to public services (schools, hospitals, and so forth) and for purposes of social interaction.

Risks in Urban Areas

With so many different people, from different places and cultures, engaged in varying activities, it seems that disaster is closer than one might think. The most easily discernible risks you might expect in the urban areas are:

  • The decline of social order
  • Failure of facilities
  • Loss of power
  • Exhaustion of food supplies

These happen to be the most volatile risks that could occur in the city given that the repercussions of failure of one or more of these could have disastrous effects. This brings to the fore the importance of understanding the significance of urban survival.

How to Survive in dire circumstances

Once you commit to staying, then you will have to take every action in your power to ensure that you survive. The consequences of staying are that, in the event of a crisis, you will have to cope with chaos or random violence, depletion of resources among other risks. Also, once you make the decision to stay you will have to commit as there is a point of no return during which making an exit will not be an option. You could try to seek solace in strength in numbers by coming together with people you trust but you might also have to be prepared to have this people ready to turn their backs on you.

Urban Survival Basic Skills

The basics are that you will have to stock up on food and water, find comfortable bedding for those cold nights and have at least a central location to make your stay. You will probably have to stay hidden due to the higher than average number of people wishing to do you harm and it might come to having to resort to violence to protect your property or your life.

In truth, there isn’t really a formula to urban survival and especially in times of a crisis. Your wits are just as important as your food and water supply meaning that those who can adapt quickly and easily are the best suited to live in such an environment.

Important Urban Prepper Survival 101

December 17, 2013

Catastrophic events are increasing in nature with little to no warning ahead of time. With over half of the world’s population living in busy cities and urban areas, urban prepper survival tips are proving to be more helpful than ever. There is more to preparation than simply packing a few food items and water; survival depends on having the essentials on hand and a well thought out plan in place. Here are the top ways to plan in case of an emergency that leaves a city struggling to provide for its residents. Urban Prepper Survival

Pack the Urban Prepper Survival Essentials

A key part of urban prepper survival is having a bug out bag available at a moment’s notice. An urban prepper bug out bag is a kit that is already put together and contains the essentials that are needed to ensure survival during an emergency or a means of escaping the situation. An urban prepper list should contain as many of the following as possible:

· Medications –

Essential medications for existing conditions should be packed in the kit. Insulin, blood thinners, and others are considered essentials that without would affect a person’s health in a detrimental manner.

· Clothing –

While it is impossible to bring along an entire wardrobe, it is a good idea to include sweaters, pants and other seasonal appropriate attire. Disasters can happen at any time of year, in any season and clothing should be changed out accordingly.

· Food and water –

The average human can survive for up to 30 days without food, but only 3 to 5 days without water. Food items should be non-perishable and water should be packaged in gallon containers for easy portability. Urban Prepper Survival

· Tools –

Basic tools such as flashlights and extra batteries, screwdrivers, hammers and axes are easily packed away. They can be used as a means of hunting, digging through rubble or for search and rescue purposes.

· Gas for automobiles –

In times of crisis, gas runs out quickly and as a result, prices skyrocket.

· Wallet and Personal ID –

A main part of urban prepper supplies is having identification and personal effects on hand. Proving one’s identity is hard to do without the proper documents.

Since many of these items tend to disappear quickly from store shelves, it is wise to prepare ahead of time. Urban Prepper Survival

Plan an Evacuation Route

In times of an emergency, there is usually little to no time to plan and chaos may ensue, especially in heavy populated areas. To avoid becoming part of the chaos, an evacuation route is important. A secure location to evacuate to should be chosen and mapped out ahead of time. Using lesser known and traveled roads is best for several reasons. Highways and interstates will likely be gridlocked, making travel difficult, if not impossible. Often times, it is necessary to abandon vehicles and travel on foot, which requires more planning than if traveling by vehicle.

Urban prepper survival depends on preparedness. Without having a plan in place, people are subject to the mercy of the conditions in the city and the people within. Having a plan in place – regardless of whether it becomes necessary to enact or not – can be the pivotal difference between survival and defeat.
